These tomato looking yellow orange fruits can be seen in supermarkets in fall. I got a few persimmon fruits from a Thai family who sells home grown produce in a flea market. Recently I have a friend bringing me produce from them and I look forward to getting my surprise and bargain produce every week. I have got unusual vegetables like bitter melon, bitter melon leaves, Malabar spinach, chives, jicama, buttercup squash, lemon grass and many other unknown varieties of squashes from them.
Persimmon Fruit Benefits
In United States, we have two kinds of persimmon fruits- the round fuyu and elongated hachiyas. The one I got are fuyus and they can be eaten even when firm as they are sweeter and not tart as hachiyas. Preliminary research published in “Advances in Horticultural Science” in 2008 indicates that eating persimmons may help limit hardening of the arteries. Persimmon is rich in vitamin A, C, and B vitamins. In the minerals department, it is dense-packed with calcium, potassium, iron, manganese, phosphorus and copper. You can add persimmon to salads, salsa, and cereal and come up with your own great recipes.
Persimmon Smoothie Recipe
The recipe is simple with only four ingredients. A tiny piece of ginger adds warmth to this smoothie on a chilly fall morning. I prefer to use vanilla powder instead of extract but if you don’t have it you can use extract or skip that ingredient. Vanilla powder is pure, unadulterated vanilla bean, and lends so much flavor to foods. Do you know about the ingredient vanillin in your packaged foods has nothing to do with the inti-inflammatory stress reducing pure vanilla? It is shocking to learn that almost 95% of “vanilla” products are not made with real vanilla. Also FDA has approved to use castoreum, a substance extracted from the anal glands of beavers to use as natural flavoring or vanilla flavoring. Also check the ingredients of your bottle of pure vanilla extract in your pantry for corn syrup. I like this brand of pure vanilla powder that is raw and organic. A little goes a long way; you only have to add 1/2 tsp of vanilla powder whenever a recipe calls for 1 tsp vanilla extract.
